Families Mourn and Search for Relatives After Attack on Kabul's Omid Addicts' Clinic

KABUL (Afghan Verified) -- Mourning overshadowed the first day of Eid for families of victims from an attack on the Omid addicts' clinic in Kabul, as many continued desperate searches for missing loved ones.

Solima, mother of victim Mazmel, a young man recently admitted to the clinic, described the devastation. "When they bombarded the containers, they all burned; my dear son burned, several others like him were torn apart," she said, her voice trembling.

Nahid, Mazmel's sister, recounted her search efforts. She visited Camp Omid hospital, then Wazir Akbar Khan and Sheikh Zayed hospitals, checking lists without success. The next day at forensics, she identified her brother but struggled to accept it. Mazmel left behind two young children, adding to Nahid's responsibilities alongside her own family.

Outside the Omid clinic, families scanned posted lists for traces of relatives. Some found hope: Khayal Mohammad, relative of a patient, said he was called about his niece and visited her after initial delays, expressing relief.

Others remained in limbo nearly two days later. Azizullah, brother of a patient, said he was checking lists for any clue. Ahmad Zia, another relative, added, "Still no information about him, we're searching to see his condition."

The anguish deepened for those whose searches ended in tragedy, as unidentified victims' bodies were buried in mass graves the previous day.
