Jalali and Donors Discuss Stronger Cooperation and Sustainable Health Services

Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health convened an online meeting with key international donors to address important issues in the health sector.

Minister Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali led the Afghan side in discussions with officials representing UNFPA, UNDP, the World Bank, the Global Fund, GAVI and the EU. The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to review the implementation of the national health policy. Strategic planning for the future of health services in the country was a major topic of conversation.

Ways to further expand the reach and quality of health services were explored by the participants. The parties examined the implications of possible reductions in funding that could take place after 2026. They also considered how financial responsibilities could be gradually transferred from the donors to the Afghan ministry. The impact of natural disasters on health services and the logistical challenges involved in delivering aid were among the challenges discussed.

Minister Jalali shared insights on how the ministry intends to take on these financial responsibilities while maintaining and improving sustainable healthcare services for the Afghan people. In its statement, the ministry noted its appreciation for the valuable support provided by the international partners over the years. It further encouraged the donors to work on mobilizing even more resources to support the health system.

For their part, the donor organizations thanked the minister and his team for their dedicated leadership. They expressed their firm commitment to standing by the ministry in its efforts to improve health outcomes. At the end of the meeting, all participants agreed on the necessity of building even stronger cooperative relationships. They jointly pledged to continue their joint work aimed at delivering sustainable healthcare services to all Afghans.
