The Taliban Supreme Court has sentenced an individual to whipping and imprisonment for insulting Taliban officials, according to the court's official newsletter.
This ruling follows a pattern of punishments handed down by Taliban courts for offenses including extramarital sexual relations and eating during the fasting period. Courts have imposed whipping and prison terms for such violations of Islamic moral codes.
In Balkh province, a woman received a five-year prison sentence for extramarital sex. In neighboring Jowzjan province, a man was sentenced to six years in prison for the same offense.
The Rawadari Human Rights Organization reported that over the past year, the Taliban carried out qisas punishments on six people, stoned one woman to death, and administered 857 whippings.
Taliban authorities have continued public whippings despite opposition from the international community, maintaining that the measures represent the enforcement of Islamic Sharia.

Reliability assessment
Two independent outlets (Afghanistan International, Amu TV) corroborate the Taliban Supreme Court's sentencing announcement from its official newsletter, providing direct on-record attribution for the core event.
The source language mixes facts with framing or advocacy wording. Afghanistan International: "like the Islamic Republic of Iran" - negative comparison implying oppressive practices; "cruel, inhuman, and degrading" - advocacy phrasing from HR report highlighting emotional condemnation; framing previous government positively as having "no punishment" for criticism contrasts with Taliban harshly.
