UN reports around 3.2 million people displaced inside Iran amid conflict
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that approximately 3.2 million people have been internally displaced within Iran since fighting intensified around February 28.
Ariana News cited UNHCR's initial assessments of families forced from their homes, noting the figure could rise with continued conflict and signaling escalating humanitarian needs for shelter, food, health services and other basics. Displaced individuals have fled to nearby provinces, relatives' homes, host communities, public buildings or informal sites, straining local resources.
Khaama Press reported a similar UNHCR estimate of around 3.2 million displaced, equivalent to 600,000 to 1 million families abandoning major cities like Tehran for safer northern provinces and rural areas. The agency warned of deepening crisis without swift aid and security improvements.
Khaama Press highlighted particular risks to Afghan refugees hosted in Iran, one of the world's largest such populations, who often lack stable income, legal status and access to essentials amid the chaos.
Ariana News provided further conflict details: U.S. President Donald Trump stated his forces won the war against Iran 'in the first hour,' sank 58 Iranian naval ships and would not withdraw soon to 'complete the job,' claiming the U.S. had 'almost destroyed Iran.' Iran's UN representative reported at least 1,332 civilian deaths from U.S. and Israeli attacks since late February. Iran threatened to halt all regional oil exports if assaults continue; Trump warned of 20-fold intensified strikes if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked. The conflict has stopped tanker transit there, spiking global oil prices. Israel aims for regime overthrow, while U.S. targets Iran's rocket and nuclear programs.
UNHCR is closely monitoring and coordinating expanded humanitarian support.
