UN Security Council Sanctions Committee Updates Information on Four Senior Taliban Officials
The UN Security Council Sanctions Committee has updated information on four senior Taliban officials as part of the regular maintenance of the 1988 sanctions list. The update occurred on 24 Hamal and includes new details on their identities and official documents.
The officials are Mohammad Hassan Akhund, listed as Prime Minister; Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs; Amir Khan Muttaqi, Foreign Minister; and Hidayatullah Badri, Minister of Mines and Petroleum. These individuals were already on the sanctions list, which enforces asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes under UN Security Council resolutions, including 1988 and 2816 (2026).
Amu TV reported aliases for some, including Mohammad Hassan Akhund as 'Mullah Haji' and Hidayatullah Badri as 'Gul Agha Eshakzai'. Hasht-e Subh referred to the four as additional Taliban members and noted that the sanctions prevent travel without UN permission, targeting those involved in violence, weapons supply, and related activities.
This update follows a previous revision last month in Hoot involving 22 Taliban officials. UN leader Hibatullah Akhundzada is not listed on the sanctions regime.
The measures aim to restrict activities linked to threats to international peace and security, with travel requiring prior UN approval.
