
US Freelance Journalist Kidnapped in Central Baghdad, Iraqi Officials Say
BAGHDAD — An American freelance journalist, Shelly Kittleson, was kidnapped Tuesday outside a hotel in central Baghdad, Iraqi police and Interior Ministry officials said.
The abduction involved two vehicles. During a pursuit by security forces, one vehicle crashed southwest of Baghdad, according to the officials. The kidnappers transferred Kittleson to the second vehicle, which escaped.
Iraqi authorities immediately launched a search operation and alerted checkpoints across the capital to locate the journalist.
US officials have detained one suspect with ties to Kataib Hezbollah in connection with the incident.
The US State Department said it is closely tracking the case.
