7 Million People Internally Displaced in Afghanistan in 2025

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) reports that approximately 7 million people were internally displaced in Afghanistan during 2025.

According to the IDMC's Annual Internal Displacement Report 2026, released on April 22, approximately 4.4 million of these individuals were displaced specifically due to conflict and violence. The report indicates that natural disasters also contributed significantly to the figures, including 8,000 new displacements caused by earthquakes in Mazar-i-Sharif and eastern provinces in August and November 2025.

The IDMC noted that Afghanistan's internal displacement figures constitute nearly half of all internal displacements in South Asia for the year.

On a global scale, the report states that more than 82 million people were internally displaced within their own countries in the past calendar year. Conflict and violence led to a record 32.3 million internal displacements worldwide in 2025.

The organization highlighted a global "structural crisis" of displacement and warned of severe resource shortages for reconstruction in Afghanistan. The report further noted that decades of conflict, droughts, and a deep economic crisis have hindered reconstruction efforts and the recovery of livelihoods.
