Afghan Evac Warns US FY2027 Budget to Close Afghan Resettlement Pathways
Afghan Evac, an organization supporting Afghan allies, states that the proposed US fiscal year 2027 budget will fully close the 'Enduring Welcome' relocation program with no replacement, eliminating key legal pathways for Afghans seeking resettlement.
The group says the budget requests no funding for immigration and asylum assistance for Afghans, instead prioritizing resources for deterrent policies, refugee returns and migration controls over humanitarian aid.
Processing of Afghan immigrants' cases faces significant delays, and entries using special immigrant visas (SIVs) have practically stopped, Afghan Evac reports. Thousands of eligible Afghans remain waiting for resettlement as refugees or through SIVs to the United States.
These developments follow heightened restrictions imposed by the Trump administration after an Afghan refugee shot at US National Guard members in Washington DC. Afghan Evac states the administration has deprived Afghan refugees of permanent residency and citizenship pathways indefinitely.
The Trump administration previously banned entry for citizens of 12 countries, including Afghanistan.
