
Afghan Health Minister, Russian Ambassador Discuss Medical Cooperation in Kabul
Afghan Minister of Public Health Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali met with Russian Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov in Kabul to discuss the expansion of bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector. The meeting centered on strengthening medical training programs, improving access to affordable pharmaceuticals, and encouraging Russian investment in Afghanistan’s health infrastructure.
A Ministry of Public Health statement indicated that both officials emphasized the need for specialized training for Afghan medical professionals, particularly in the treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The discussion also addressed the establishment of mechanisms to facilitate knowledge-sharing visits and coordinate laboratory standards between the two countries.
During the talks, Ambassador Zhirnov requested that Afghan health authorities compile a comprehensive list of essential medicines and medical equipment currently required in the country. The ministry noted that both sides agreed to explore pathways for importing cost-effective medications and to create a more favorable environment for Russian pharmaceutical companies seeking to invest in the Afghan market.
Officials further discussed plans to organize a visit by an Afghan health delegation to Russia, aimed at observing medical facilities and finalizing technical agreements. The ministry stated that continued dialogue between Kabul and Moscow will focus on addressing immediate public health needs while building long-term institutional capacity. The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening health sector ties and implementing the discussed initiatives.
