Afghan Ministries Issue Weather Warnings for Heavy Rain and Flash Floods
Government authorities have issued weather warnings for heavy rainfall, flash floods, and strong winds expected to impact multiple regions across Afghanistan over the coming days. Officials from the Ministry of Water and Energy and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation advised residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution and take preventive measures.
The Ministry of Water and Energy forecasted significant precipitation and potential flooding from May 3 to 4, specifically targeting the northern, Kabul, and Panj Amu river basins. Authorities warned of rising water levels and increased flood risks along rivers spanning 18 provinces, including Faryab, Balkh, Kabul, Nangarhar, Badakhshan, and Kunduz.
In a separate advisory, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation highlighted similar weather threats across 12 provinces. Meteorological data indicates expected rainfall totals between 10 and 30 millimeters, accompanied by wind speeds reaching 50 to 85 kilometers per hour in central and southeastern areas. The ministry also cautioned against thunderstorms and sudden flash flooding in these regions.
Both government bodies urged communities living near riverbanks and flood-prone zones to avoid waterways until conditions stabilize. Officials emphasized the importance of alerting downstream populations to mitigate potential casualties and property damage. Residents were advised to monitor official updates and secure loose outdoor materials ahead of the incoming weather systems.
The warnings come as seasonal weather patterns typically bring increased precipitation to parts of the country. Authorities continue to coordinate with local disaster management teams to ensure rapid response capabilities remain active throughout the forecast period.
