Afghan Official Stresses Regional Water Cooperation in Turkey Roundtable
Abdul Hai Qanit, who serves as the Director of Strategic Studies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, took part in an important roundtable that was held in Turkey. The focus of the gathering was on the topic of ensuring water security across Central Asia in light of the challenges posed by climate change.
This event was organized through the joint efforts of the International Institute for Central Asia as well as the International Water Management Institute. During his intervention at the roundtable, Qanit placed strong emphasis on the requirement to set up a joint framework aimed at managing water resources in the region. He specified that this framework must allow for the inclusive participation of every country that is part of the water basins.
Furthermore, the Afghan official spoke of the need to improve the sharing of information between the relevant parties. He pointed out that it is essential to work on reducing losses of water, to engage in technical forms of dialogue, and to come together for collective measures that help in addressing the impacts of climate change.
The roundtable meeting brought to the forefront the important role that Afghanistan plays when it comes to water related matters in the region. Those present also recognized the critical importance of enhancing cooperative relationships among the countries so as to manage the shared water resources in a manner that is equitable for everyone. The Centre for Strategic Studies of Afghanistan later released a statement through the platform known as X that provided further information on Qanit's attendance at the event and the specific views that he expressed there.
