Afghanistan defeats Canada by 82 runs in final T20 World Cup group match
CHENNAI, India -- Afghanistan's national cricket team ended its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group D campaign with an 82-run victory over Canada on Tuesday.
Ibrahim Zadran scored an unbeaten 95 to help Afghanistan post 200 for 4. Canada was bowled out well short of the target.
The win provided a morale boost after a frustrating tournament. Afghanistan recorded two victories, including a five-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates earlier in the group stage. However, narrow defeats to New Zealand and South Africa prevented advancement to the Super Eight stage. The match against South Africa was decided in a double Super Over.
South Africa and New Zealand topped the competitive Group D and progressed.
The match marked the final outing for head coach Jonathan Trott, who stepped down after the tournament. Trott, a former international player, helped develop Afghanistan's team through high-profile events.
Afghan fans celebrated the fighting spirit shown, though the result was bittersweet.
