Afghanistan Signs $416,000 Agreement for Disaster Risk Reduction

Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority has signed a memorandum of understanding valued at $416,000 with the World Social Services Institute in Asia to implement a series of disaster risk reduction initiatives across the country. The agreement outlines a coordinated effort to strengthen community resilience and improve emergency preparedness through targeted infrastructure and training programs.

Under the terms of the agreement, funded projects will include the construction of a protective wall in the Bati Kot district of Nangarhar province, alongside the removal of unstable, landslide-prone rock formations in several other regions. The initiative also calls for the establishment of volunteer survey teams and the delivery of specialized training in disaster management and geographic information systems. These measures are designed to enhance early warning capabilities and streamline local response efforts.

The memorandum was formally executed by National Disaster Management Authority Director General Mullah Nooruddin Turabi and World Social Services Institute in Asia Head Hizb al-Rahman Rahman. During the signing ceremony, officials highlighted the importance of building local capacities to mitigate the impact of natural hazards. Both parties emphasized that project implementation would prioritize transparency and timely execution, ensuring that allocated resources directly benefit vulnerable communities. The collaboration marks a continued focus on integrating technical expertise with community-led safety measures to address recurring environmental threats.
