At least 14 Afghan migrants drown after boat collides with Turkish coast guard off Antalya
Turkish officials reported that at least 14 Afghan migrants died after a boat carrying illegal migrants sank off the coast of Antalya.
The incident occurred early Monday morning near the Demre region, where the boat's passengers included women and children, according to local authorities cited by RIA Novosti. Coast guard forces attempted to stop the vessel, but it performed sharp maneuvers while fleeing and collided with a coast guard boat, causing several passengers to fall into the sea.
In the aftermath, at least 14 people lost their lives. Officials stated that 14 other migrants were detained, while seven were rescued by coast guard forces. The remaining passengers were transferred to shore, with medical assistance provided to some.
Local authorities announced that an investigation into the circumstances of the event has begun.
