Australia Reopens Parliamentary Friendship Group with the People of Afghanistan

The Afghan embassy in Australia announced the re-establishment of a parliamentary friendship group with the people of Afghanistan. The initiative seeks to bolster solidarity and sustain international focus on developments in the country.

A launch ceremony took place in the Australian parliament, drawing attendance from members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as representatives from the Australian government, civil institutions, and the Afghan migrant community.

Julian Hill, who serves as co-chair of the group, outlined its goals during the event. He said the group aims to support human rights and preserve ties with the people of Afghanistan.

Matt Thistlethwaite, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, highlighted Australia's ongoing commitment to Afghans. He noted that the present circumstances in Afghanistan must not be allowed to become permanent. Thistlethwaite also called for backing the rights of women and girls and for holding the Taliban accountable regarding human rights issues.

Monique Ryan, another co-chair, spoke about the enduring connections between Afghanistan and Australia. She expressed gratitude to the Afghan-Australian community for their contributions.

The Afghan ambassador to Australia described the reactivation as an expression of political and moral support. He stressed that Afghans require solidarity rather than recognition of the Taliban. The ambassador added that assistance should not serve to legitimize Taliban policies.

Speakers at the ceremony underscored the importance of championing the rights of women and girls. They also focused on safeguarding previous human rights gains and ensuring continued global attention to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
