Axios: US Attack on Iran May Begin Sooner and More Extensively Than Expected
Axios reported on Wednesday that the United States is approaching a large-scale military operation against Iran, which could start sooner and more extensively than anticipated.
Two Israeli officials stated that Israel is preparing for a maximum scenario, including regime change and strikes on Iran's nuclear and missile programs, with possible actions beginning in the coming days.
Nuclear negotiations in Geneva between the US and Iran have shown progress but details remain unresolved, according to a US official. Iran indicated it will return in two weeks with detailed proposals to address gaps in positions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said both sides agreed on guiding principles for a potential deal, but Iran's right to nuclear energy use is non-negotiable.
The US has deployed significant forces and equipment to the region, raising the possibility of joint operations with Israel. US sources told Axios the potential operation would be a multi-week, extensive campaign resembling a full-scale war rather than a limited action.
Iran is offering financial incentives, investment opportunities and trade deals with the US, including in oil and energy, to advance talks. It proposed suspending uranium enrichment for three to five years, followed by joining a regional consortium for civilian-level enrichment.
If negotiations fail, the likelihood of a military operation with major consequences for Iran has risen. The final US decision remains pending, though sources close to the White House assess the chance of action in the coming weeks as high.
