Former British politician Tobias Ellwood has urged Britain to pursue active diplomacy with the Taliban instead of relying on isolation.
Writing in The Telegraph, Ellwood argued that shouting from afar cannot reform the Taliban. He advocated for direct engagement, including the possible reopening of the British embassy in Kabul, without extending formal recognition to the group.
Ellwood cited multiple concerns stemming from Afghanistan's current situation. Severe poverty and despair among the country's 40 million people are boosting recruitment for ISIS-K and driving migration toward Europe, he said. He also warned that continued neglect of Afghanistan could pave the way for increased Chinese influence over its mineral resources. The former MP noted the presence of differing voices within the Taliban administration.
Ellwood referenced his own 2023 statements in which he claimed that Afghanistan under Taliban rule was in a better situation than during the republic period and had achieved stability. Those remarks contributed to his resignation as chairman of the British Parliament's Defense Committee. He acknowledged the outcome of two decades of British military involvement in Afghanistan, which cost billions of dollars and claimed the lives of 457 British soldiers before ending in failure as the Taliban regained power. Ellwood also drew attention to a 2026 report by a Dutch children's rights foundation that placed Afghanistan last among 194 countries in the area of children's rights under Taliban rule.

Reliability assessment
Single source provides direct attribution to named former UK MP Tobias Ellwood and his published article in The Telegraph, along with verifiable historical details (e.g., British soldier deaths) and a specific named report; the core facts concern what Ellwood publicly stated.
The source language mixes facts with framing or advocacy wording. Afghanistan International: "right-wing British politician" frames the subject politically; "shouting from afar" and "forced to resign after a controversial statement praising the Taliban" carry dismissive and critical undertones toward current Western policy.
