China Establishes 'Senling' Administrative Unit in Xinjiang Near Afghan Border
China has announced the creation of a new administrative unit named Senling in its Xinjiang province, located near the Afghan border in the Wakhan Corridor.
According to a local Xinjiang government announcement, the unit was established on March 26 and operates under the administration of Kashgar city. It is positioned near the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, close to the Karakoram mountain range.
The primary purpose of Senling is to strengthen border control and prevent infiltration by Uyghur separatist militants. Chinese officials cited concerns over groups such as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) as a key factor in the decision.
This is the third new administrative unit created in Xinjiang in over a year, highlighting Beijing's efforts to secure ethnically sensitive border regions amid ongoing security challenges.
