China to Grant Tariff-Free Imports to 53 African Countries Starting May 2026
Starting in May 2026, China will allow tariff-free access to its market for goods from 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, state media reported.
The policy expands on previous tariff exemptions that applied only to 33 least-developed African countries, according to a Reuters report. Officials in Beijing stated that the move aims to boost trade, investment and economic cooperation between China and African partners.
Negotiations on additional trade and economic partnerships are ongoing to deepen long-term commercial relations, the officials said.
The initiative is intended to ease access for African exporters to the Chinese market, reduce their export costs and strengthen bilateral commercial ties.
Analysts anticipate that the tariff exemptions will increase trade flows and investment exchanges, supporting economic growth opportunities between China and the participating African economies.
The decision reflects China's broader strategy to expand economic engagement with Africa, with further growth in trade cooperation expected as new agreements are implemented.
