Construction of New Central Prison Facility Begins in Panjshir Province
Construction of a new central prison facility has officially commenced in Panjshir province, marking a significant infrastructure development for the region’s justice system. The project, located in the Baharak area of Bazarak district, spans more than five and a half acres and is being financed by the General Directorate of Prisons Administration of the Islamic Emirate at a total cost of 116 million Afghanis.
According to provincial and national officials, the facility will comprise 23 blocks containing 100 rooms. The design incorporates a mosque, a sports ground, an education center, and vocational workshops. Authorities stated that these amenities are intended to support rehabilitation programs and provide skill-building opportunities for detainees.
The current construction phase follows the completion of a preliminary infrastructure project last year. That earlier initiative, funded at 13 million Afghanis, established retaining walls, perimeter fencing, and watchtowers to secure the site. Officials noted that the new facility will centralize detention operations in the province and replace older, less secure structures.
Hedayatullah Hemat, head of the prison administration, and Panjshir Governor Hafiz Mohammad Agha Hakim attended the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the work. Both officials emphasized the administration’s focus on improving detention standards and ensuring that correctional facilities meet established operational requirements.
The project is expected to enhance capacity for the provincial justice sector while integrating educational and vocational training into the daily management of inmates. Further details regarding the construction timeline and expected completion date have not yet been released.
