Construction of Standard Central Prison Begins in Panjshir
Construction has commenced on a new standard central prison in Panjshir province, marking a shift away from temporary detention facilities. The project, funded at a cost of 116 million Afghanis, is being developed on a site spanning more than 11 jeribs of land. Provincial authorities announced that the facility is designed to meet modern detention standards and will serve as a permanent hub for the region’s correctional system.
According to provincial officials, the prison will feature 23 distinct blocks and nearly 100 rooms. The construction is expected to be completed within two years. Hedayatullah Hemat, head of the provincial prison administration, stated that the new complex will replace current makeshift holding centers and eliminate the need to transfer detainees to facilities in other provinces. The project is being overseen by contractor Engineer Fazalrabi, who is managing the structural development and site preparation.
Governor Mohammad Agha Hakim emphasized that the facility will prioritize inmate rehabilitation alongside secure detention. Officials noted that the prison will include dedicated spaces for literacy classes, vocational training, and skills development programs. The administration stated that consolidating detention operations within Panjshir will streamline judicial processes, reduce logistical costs, and improve overall living conditions for those held in custody. Construction crews have begun initial groundwork, with structural work scheduled to follow as the project progresses toward its two-year completion target.
