Dagestan Allocates 60.9 Million Rubles for Soviet-Afghan War Veterans
Officials in Russia's Republic of Dagestan announced the allocation of 60.9 million rubles (approximately $777,000) from the republic's reserve fund for one-time cash payments to veterans of the Soviet-Afghan War and families of victims.
The Dagestan government issued an official decree approving the funds, as reported by Russia's TASS news agency on Friday. The payments target veterans, widowed spouses, and parents of those killed or deceased during the war. Each eligible individual will receive 20,000 rubles.
Sergey Melikov, president of Dagestan, stated: "This is a tribute to you. Every Afghanistan war veteran will receive 20,000 rubles once. We will do the same next year and on the 40th anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, we will double this amount to 40,000 rubles."
Local officials indicated that 3,048 people, including veterans and their family members, will benefit from the aid. The decision comes ahead of the anniversary of the Soviet forces' withdrawal from Afghanistan, with the stated goal of providing social support to those affected by the war.
