European Leaders Meet in Berlin to Strengthen Defense Cooperation Ahead of NATO Summit

Leaders representing Germany, Britain, France, Italy, and Poland gathered together in Berlin on Wednesday for high-level talks. During the meeting, they pledged to pursue closer defense cooperation and to maintain a united front as they prepare for the upcoming NATO summit.

The event was hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In his remarks, Merz emphasized the importance of strengthening what he described as the European pillar of the alliance. He pointed out that the July 7-8 NATO summit in Ankara would provide European countries with an opportunity to show their commitment to assuming greater responsibility for security across the continent.

Following their discussions, the five leaders released a joint statement. This document reaffirmed their dedication to Euro-Atlantic security as well as the broader transatlantic partnership, especially in the face of ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

A range of pressing issues received attention at the gathering. Among them were concerns related to Russia’s war in Ukraine and questions surrounding the future role of the United States in European security under President Donald Trump. The participants also considered the necessity of achieving greater European strategic autonomy through increased military investment.

In addition, the leaders acknowledged internal European challenges. These include the stalled German-French fighter jet project, which has been hindered by disputes over management and industrial control.
