Rochelle Garcia Hermida, a member of the European Parliament, has issued a public apology to the Afghan people over the European Commission's decision to invite a Taliban delegation to Brussels. She referred to the invitation as madness and conveyed regret on behalf of 450 million Europeans. Hermida also committed to acting as the voice for Afghan women and girls who have been silenced.
The meeting took place after the European Commission extended an invitation to the five-member Taliban delegation. The group was led by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi and arrived in Brussels on Tuesday. European Union officials characterized the discussions as a technical level meeting centered on the deportation of Afghan migrants who have been convicted of crimes.
Several voices expressed opposition to the engagement. Hannah Neumann, who serves as a member of the European Parliament, cautioned that the invitation and subsequent meeting could send a political signal that risks legitimizing the Taliban. Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, stated that inviting the Taliban to discuss deportations would amount to an insult to the Afghan people, particularly women.
In contrast, the Taliban presented a different view of the agenda. Spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi indicated that the talks covered consular services as well as confidence-building measures between the parties.
The event has highlighted divisions within European institutions regarding engagement with the Taliban authorities.

Reliability assessment
Single source provides direct on-record attribution with concrete details from multiple named public figures (MEPs Hermida and Neumann, Taliban spokesperson Balkhi, UN rapporteur Bennett)
The source language mixes facts with framing or advocacy wording. Amu TV: "madness" (repeatedly used to describe meetings with the Taliban), "insult to Afghans, especially women", "gender apartheid"; these phrases emotionally frame the EU invitation as morally outrageous and delegitimizing, mixing reporting with strong opinion language and advocacy for Afghan women's rights.
