European Union Calls for De-escalation of Tensions Between Afghanistan and Pakistan
The European Union and its member states called for the immediate de-escalation of tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan during the 95th Standing Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
In a statement, the European Union urged all parties to engage in dialogue, respect international laws, refrain from further escalation, protect civilians and support territorial integrity. It stated that Afghan soil should not be used to threaten or attack other countries and called on the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to take effective action against militant groups operating within the country.
The European Union expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, including restrictions on women's work in international organizations.
It highlighted the return of more than four million Afghans from Iran and Pakistan over the past two years, which has placed additional pressure on Afghanistan's fragile economy and public services.
The European Union also voiced concerns over forced deportations, emphasizing the importance of respecting the right to asylum and the principle of non-refoulement.
