Exiled Afghan Journalists Launch Nimroz TV in France

A group of exiled Afghan journalists has established Nimroz TV, a new independent television network based in France. The outlet officially began operations on Thursday, focusing on developments inside Afghanistan alongside regional and international affairs.

The network is currently distributing its programming through a dedicated website and various social media platforms. Its founders stated that the initiative aims to provide independent news coverage while drawing attention to human rights and press freedom issues within Afghanistan.

The launch occurs amid a significant contraction of the domestic media landscape following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Since that time, local outlets have faced increasing restrictions, including the detention of reporters, widespread censorship, and official intimidation. Authorities have also implemented directives that prohibit the broadcast of images depicting living beings, further limiting the scope of permissible journalism.

Operating from abroad allows the editorial team to report on stories that are increasingly difficult to cover within the country. By utilizing digital distribution channels, the network intends to reach Afghan audiences both domestically and across the diaspora. The founders emphasized their commitment to maintaining journalistic standards and providing a platform for reporting that adheres to independent editorial guidelines.
