
Explosion at Burundi Military Ammunition Depot Kills 13, Injures 57
BUJUMBURA, Burundi — At least 13 people were killed and 57 others injured in an explosion late Tuesday at the main ammunition depot of the Burundi National Defence Force in Bujumbura's Musaga area.
The blast was reportedly caused by an electrical short circuit, according to details provided by army spokesman Gen. Gaspard Baratuza.
Gen. Baratuza said the explosion damaged houses in various neighborhoods, private vehicles, as well as military equipment and facilities, which were burned and destroyed.
The arsenal is situated in a densely populated area adjacent to the Higher Institute for Military Cadres (ISCAM).
President Évariste Ndayishimiye expressed sympathy for the victims on social media.
