On the morning of Friday, thousands of users in various parts of the world reported that they were unable to use Facebook and Instagram properly due to outages. The specific problems that users faced involved an inability to access comments sections, modify account settings, load their news feeds, and use other important features of the applications. These difficulties started to occur shortly before 10 a.m. Eastern Time on that day.

Services that monitor internet outages noted a significant and sudden increase in the number of reports coming in around the time the problems began. The information collected by IsDown and the outage tracker operated by NordVPN showed clear evidence of the spike in issues being experienced by people trying to use the platforms. The effects of the disruption were felt by users living in multiple regions. Among those regions was the United States. As the problems persisted, many people went to other online platforms such as X and Reddit in order to talk about what was happening and to share details of the issues they were facing.

As of late morning on Friday, the company Meta had not yet given any public explanation about why the outages had taken place. There was also no confirmation from Meta about the specific cause behind the technical difficulties that led to the service interruptions. The current incident is part of a series of similar events that have affected Meta in recent times. One example is the major global outage that took place during 2021. A different outage affecting the services was also reported at an earlier point in the year.
