Flash Floods Kill Five and Destroy Hundreds of Homes in Badghis and Ghor
Heavy rain and hail triggered flash floods across multiple districts in Afghanistan’s Badghis and Ghor provinces on Wednesday evening, killing at least five people and destroying hundreds of homes. Provincial officials have warned that casualty and damage assessments are ongoing and figures are expected to rise as rescue teams reach isolated areas.
In Badghis province, Baridad Saber, head of the provincial disaster preparedness department, confirmed five fatalities, including one woman and three members of a single family. The flooding severely impacted the districts of Aab Kamari, Bala Murghab, Muqur, Qadis, and Ghormach. Saber reported that at least thirty homes were completely washed away and extensive agricultural land was submerged, threatening local livelihoods ahead of the harvest season.
Neighboring Ghor province also faced significant destruction. The provincial governor’s media office reported that floodwaters swept through Jeh village in the Murghab district, destroying nearly one hundred homes along with farmland and mature trees. Local authorities emphasized that displaced families are in urgent need of emergency shelter, food, and clean water.
The sudden weather event has disrupted local infrastructure and travel routes. Provincial disaster management teams have begun coordinating initial relief efforts, though difficult terrain and damaged roads are complicating access to remote communities. Officials are calling for coordinated humanitarian support to assist with the distribution of essential supplies as recovery operations continue across the affected regions.
