Severe floods triggered by heavy rains in Badghis province have killed five people, including a three-year-old child, local officials said.

Three people died in Qadis district and two in Dareh Boom district after rainfall from midnight Friday to Saturday morning, according to reports. The floods caused significant financial losses and destroyed agricultural lands in the affected areas.

Government teams have been dispatched to Badghis for initial damage surveys, but complete assessments are not yet available.

In the wider western region, heavy rains and flooding temporarily closed the Herat-Kandahar highway. In Farah province, recent rainfall swelled the Farah River, but levels have normalized and traffic is now flowing, Mohammad Israel Siar, head of the Farah Natural Disaster Management Department, said.
