Abdul Basir Anwar, former Minister of Justice of Afghanistan and a member of the leadership of the Supreme Resistance Council, died Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey.
His death was confirmed by former Vice President Surur Danish, who is also a member of the Supreme Resistance Council. Danish described Anwar as a mujahid personality, scholar, visionary, patient and insightful figure who played active roles in the political and struggle arenas.
Anwar had been living in Turkey since he left Afghanistan following the fall of the republican system in 2021. Close associates and friends indicated that he had been struggling with heart disease in recent months, although his family has not made an official announcement regarding the cause of death.
Throughout his career, Anwar founded the Islamic Movement of Afghanistan and held various positions in the mujahideen government, including serving as deputy or acting Minister of Public Health. He headed the political committee of the Islamic Party and participated in the 2001 Bonn Conference. He also worked as a presidential advisor on social affairs from 1391 to 1394 and served as Minister of Justice for more than five years.
Anwar was born in 1331 in Parwan province. His education included studies at Naderia High School and the Faculty of Medicine at Kabul University, as well as at the Islamic Academy in Peshawar and an educational center in Multan, Pakistan.
