A New York court has sentenced Haji Najibullah, a former Taliban commander, to 42 years in prison for his role in the 2008 kidnapping of American journalist David Rhode and two companions.

The kidnapping took place in Maidan Wardak province and was carried out to obtain money and secure the release of Taliban prisoners from US detention. The hostages were forced to record proof-of-life videos while facing threats from Taliban fighters.

Najibullah had served as a Taliban commander in Maidan Wardak province since 2007 and acted as an unofficial spokesperson for the group. He was arrested in October 2020 while traveling to Ukraine and was later transferred to the United States.

The office of the Trump administration's special envoy stated that the imprisonment sends a clear message to hostage-takers and terrorism supporters. Officials affirmed that the United States will continue to pursue accountability for victims.

US envoy Adam Boller traveled to Kabul and met Taliban officials. He stated that no deal or money was paid for the release of Denis Koyle and declared that hostage diplomacy is dead.

Reliability assessment

Single source provides direct, on-record attribution with concrete, checkable details including specific court outcome, exact sentence, named individuals (David Rhode, Adam Boller, Haji Najibullah), dates (2008 kidnapping, October 2020 arrest), locations (Maidan Wardak, New York court, Ukraine travel), and official statements.

The source language mixes facts with framing or advocacy wording. Afghanistan International: "clear message to hostage-takers and terrorism supporters", "cause suffering to families", "policy of hostage-taking in exchange for concessions from the US is dead" - these phrases frame the events with strong moral condemnation and portray the Taliban negatively through loaded terms like terrorism supporters and suffering.
