Germany Rules Out Reopening Kabul Embassy, Maintains Current Diplomatic Ties
Germany’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it has no plans to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kabul, stating that its current engagement with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan remains unchanged. During a recent press conference, ministry spokesperson Martin Geshe clarified that no new decision has been made regarding the restoration of the embassy’s operations.
Geshe noted that diplomatic and technical relations between the two countries continue under existing arrangements. As part of this framework, representatives of the Islamic Emirate have been entrusted with managing Germany’s embassy in Berlin and its consulate in Bonn. The ministry emphasized that these operational adjustments reflect the ongoing nature of bilateral ties without signaling a shift toward formal diplomatic recognition or the reestablishment of a full mission in Afghanistan.
Afghan political analysts have observed that the current diplomatic posture underscores the need for sustained engagement from Kabul. Experts suggest that the Islamic Emirate could benefit from pursuing more active diplomatic outreach across European capitals. Such efforts, they argue, would help foster mutual trust and potentially create pathways toward broader international recognition and normalized relations.
The German government’s position aligns with a broader cautious approach adopted by many European states regarding Afghanistan’s de facto authorities. While technical and administrative channels remain open, full diplomatic normalization continues to depend on evolving political conditions and mutual confidence-building measures.
