Religious scholars and residents in Afghanistan's western Herat province have stressed the importance of maintaining calm and using legal methods to address grievances with authorities. The call comes in the wake of protests that escalated into violence last week.

During a gathering, dozens of participants urged that public demands be presented peacefully through official channels. They highlighted the need to preserve security and national unity.

Religious scholars Mohammad Akbari and Mohammad Amin Naseh said demands should be communicated via scholars and elders. They stressed the value of keeping strong relations and trust between the nation and government structures.

Local residents Gholam Hossein and Sultan Sharifi warned against actions that could undermine security. They encouraged young people to approach the situation with reason and restraint.

Governor Noor Ahmad Islamjar said residents who have complaints regarding the morality police, security institutions or other sectors should bring their issues to the provincial administration for handling.

Security officials had moved to prevent the spread of the violent protests that occurred in the province the previous week.
