International Community Shifts to Pragmatic Engagement with Afghanistan, UNAMA Plays Key Role

Nearly five years after the 2021 events, the international community has moved from isolation toward pragmatic engagement with Afghanistan, according to analysis in The Diplomat.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) serves as a pivotal diplomatic mediator between Taliban authorities and the international community. Operating under a UN Security Council mandate, UNAMA focuses on political engagement, human rights monitoring and humanitarian aid coordination.

UN officials have stated that engagement represents the only practical option given Afghanistan's economic and social challenges. Sanctions target specific individuals, but the lack of international recognition continues to hinder investment and development.

Regional cooperation with Central Asian countries is expanding in humanitarian logistics, trade and infrastructure projects. Uzbekistan's Termez has emerged as a key hub for aid distribution to Afghanistan.

Challenges remain in establishing a common international framework due to differing views among stakeholders. UNAMA emphasizes maintaining open channels for dialogue despite persistent lack of trust.

In a related development, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev have supported the opening of a new UN Regional Centre for Sustainable Development Goals in Almaty in 2025.
