Iran fires missiles at Israel as regional conflict escalates; UN experts condemn US, Israel attacks
Several missiles were fired toward Israel early Thursday as fighting between Iran and the United States-Israel alliance continued to escalate, according to Agence France-Presse as reported by Khaama Press. The strike followed a U.S. submarine sinking an Iranian warship in international waters. The conflict, now in its sixth day, has resulted in more than 1,000 deaths across multiple fronts, with tensions fueled by disputes over Iran's nuclear program and regional influence.
The escalating hostilities have disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, and raised fears of a broader regional war.
Separately, UN experts condemned attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, describing them as unprovoked and carried out amid diplomatic negotiations without UN Security Council authorization. The experts stated that such actions violate the UN Charter's prohibitions on the use of force, sovereignty equality, territorial integrity, and the duty to settle disputes peacefully.
They warned that these strikes are part of unilateral illegal actions destabilizing the region and expressed concern over Iran's retaliatory attacks across the Persian Gulf and Middle East. The UN experts also voiced worries about Israel's multiple attacks on Lebanon, which have caused civilian displacement, injuries, and deaths.
The UN experts called on all parties to immediately halt hostilities and resume diplomatic dialogue.
