Iran-US delegations return to capitals after third round of indirect nuclear talks in Geneva

The negotiating delegations of Iran and the United States held three hours of intensive indirect talks in Geneva on Thursday before returning to their capitals for consultations.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei stated on the sidelines of the negotiations that the discussions focused solely on nuclear issues and that any agreement must include the lifting of sanctions. He said initiatives were raised that require consultation with capitals and added that a better summary could be provided at the end of the talks. Baghaei accused U.S. officials of inconsistencies while emphasizing Iran's serious participation.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner entered the talks with stringent demands, under pressure from hardline factions and Republican members of Congress. According to the report, U.S. negotiators are likely emphasizing the dismantling of Iran's Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan nuclear facilities, the handover of all enriched uranium stockpiles, and a permanent agreement.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, wrote on X that if the main issue is preventing nuclear weapons development, an immediate agreement is possible and Iran's foreign minister has sufficient authority.

The third round of talks began at 10 a.m. Thursday in a building of the Omani embassy in Geneva under heavy security.
