Iran's Foreign Minister Warns UK Against Allowing US Use of Military Bases
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned Britain's Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in a phone conversation that permitting the United States to use military bases in Britain or other countries would be considered participation in aggression against Iran.
Araghchi called for reconsideration of such permissions, stating that attacks by the US and Israel on Iran constituted violations of international principles and laws. He criticized the approach of some European countries, including Britain, on the matter.
Referring to Article 51 of the UN Charter, Araghchi emphasized Iran's right to self-defense. He noted that Iran respects the sovereignty of neighboring countries but said the attacks were carried out from American bases located there. Any cooperation in this regard, he added, would amount to participation in military action against Iran and would affect future relations between the countries.
Cooper expressed concern over the political and economic consequences of escalating tensions, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy transfers.
