Irish Parliamentary Committee to Review Afghanistan Human Rights Situation
The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Irish Parliament will convene to assess the human rights situation in Afghanistan, with a specific focus on restrictions imposed on women and girls and the treatment of ethnic and religious minorities. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM local time in Committee Room 2 at Leinster House.
The session will feature testimony from United Nations Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett, alongside human rights advocate Hassan al-Faiz. Irish committee members Mahbouba Faiz and John Lahart are also slated to participate in the proceedings and engage with the invited experts.
Committee leadership stated that the human rights environment in Afghanistan has deteriorated significantly since August 2021. Officials highlighted the suspension of educational access for girls and women, widespread employment restrictions, and limitations on freedom of movement as primary concerns. The committee noted that these policies have disproportionately impacted marginalized communities, including the Hazara population, and have drawn international scrutiny.
The meeting aims to gather expert testimony and evaluate current conditions to inform Ireland’s diplomatic and humanitarian engagement. Lawmakers and invited speakers will review the impact of recent policy directives and discuss potential international advocacy measures regarding the protection of fundamental rights in the country. The proceedings will serve as a platform for documenting ongoing developments and shaping future parliamentary responses to the crisis.
