
Islamic Emirate Official Highlights Sports Expansion and Regional Ties at Kabul Competition
Mawlawi Ahmadullah Wasiq, head of the General Presidency of Physical Education, Sports and Olympics, addressed attendees at the opening ceremony of the Dewaz sports competition in Kabul, emphasizing the role of athletics in fostering regional dialogue. He stated that the Islamic Emirate views sports as a vital bridge for communication and unity among neighboring nations.
The event drew athletes from several regional countries who traveled to Kabul to participate in the tournament. During his remarks, Wasiq outlined recent developments in the country’s athletic sector, noting that sports infrastructure has been expanded across multiple provinces. He reported that the General Presidency currently oversees 490 monthly sports programs nationwide.
Wasiq also highlighted recent international successes attributed to Afghan athletes under the current administration. He noted that competitors have secured more than 400 international medals over the past four years. Among these achievements, he specifically pointed to the Afghan under-17 futsal team, which recently claimed the Asian championship title for the first time in the country’s history.
The official reiterated that continued investment in athletic facilities and youth programs remains a priority for the government. He added that hosting international and regional competitions provides a platform for cultural exchange and strengthens diplomatic ties through shared sporting interests. The Dewaz competition is expected to continue over the coming days, featuring matches across several disciplines.
