James Webb Telescope Captures Clearest Image of Exoplanet Surface
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured the clearest image yet of the exoplanet LHS 3844 b, revealing a hot, airless, and basaltic surface. Published research confirms the tidally locked world lacks an atmosphere and is uninhabitable.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has produced the most detailed image to date of the surface of LHS 3844 b, a rocky exoplanet located 49 light-years from Earth. The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Astronomy, provide new insights into the atmospheric and geological conditions of the distant world.
The planet, informally referred to as Kwakwa, orbits a red dwarf star and is tidally locked, meaning one hemisphere permanently faces its host star while the other remains in perpetual darkness. Spectral data from the telescope indicates that the dayside of the planet reaches temperatures of approximately 725 degrees Celsius. Researchers describe the surface as basaltic and largely airless, drawing direct comparisons to a larger version of Mercury.
Lead researchers Lara Kreidberg and Sebastian Zieba analyzed the observational data to determine the planet’s exact composition. Their study confirms that LHS 3844 b lacks a substantial atmosphere and shows no evidence of liquid water. Based on these extreme environmental conditions, the researchers concluded that the planet is definitively uninhabitable.
The observations were made possible by the telescope’s advanced infrared instruments, which allowed scientists to map surface features and measure thermal emissions with unprecedented clarity. The published research contributes to broader scientific efforts to characterize rocky worlds and assess their potential for habitability beyond the solar system.
