VILNIUS (Afghan Verified) -- Lithuanian border officials detained 34 illegal migrants attempting to enter the country from Belarus, including Afghan citizens, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service said.

The group, the largest detained this year, included nationals from Algeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Eritrea. It surpassed a previous group of 29 migrants caught on March 25, according to the service.

The migrants were subsequently returned to Belarusian territory.

Lithuania has maintained a policy since August 2021 of returning such illegal migrants amid a rise in attempts from Asia and Africa. In 2025, more than 1,600 migrants were returned to Belarus from Lithuania. So far this year, the figure stands at 169 cases.
