U.S. Vice President JD Vance announced that more than 12.5 million barrels of oil have passed through the Strait of Hormuz since the agreement between the United States and Iran was signed. The deal is intended to end hostilities and restore maritime traffic through the waterway. The memorandum includes commitments to lift restrictions and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels.
Three tankers carrying around six million barrels of Saudi crude were among the first to transit the strait following the agreement. These early shipments demonstrate the initial resumption of oil transport under the new arrangements between the two sides.
The agreement was signed electronically by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. It commits Washington to lifting maritime restrictions around Iranian ports while Tehran works to restore commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Planned follow-up talks in Switzerland involving the United States, Iran, Qatar and Pakistan were postponed amid ongoing diplomatic efforts. The postponement resulted from logistical issues related to Vice President Vance's attendance at the meetings.
