More Than 86,000 Afghan Migrants Return from Iran and Pakistan in Past Month

The UNHCR has reported that more than 86,000 Afghan migrants returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan in the past month. The time frame for these returns was from March 11 to April 11.

This large number of returnees has put a spotlight on the needs of Afghans coming back to the country. According to UNHCR Deputy Spokesperson Faramarz Barzin, most of the returnees need immediate cash aid. They also require shelter and support for their livelihoods.

Humanitarian groups including the UNHCR are working to provide these services. They are active at border crossings where the migrants are returning.

The Commission for Addressing Migrant Issues has given a separate figure. It says more than 31,000 Afghan families returned from Iran and Pakistan in the same period.

The situation for Afghans in Pakistan appears to be difficult. Migrants have reported facing continued pressure from the Pakistani military. This includes detention and forced transfers to camps.

Some of those who returned from Pakistan have criticized these actions. They have described them as forced deportations. These migrants have called on rights organizations to intervene and help stop such practices.

There have also been calls from global organizations for an end to the forced deportation of Afghans.
