Nine killed, six injured in coal mine explosion in Colombia
At least nine miners were killed and six others injured following a gas-related explosion at a coal mine in Sutatausa, Colombia. The incident occurred at a legally operated facility managed by Carbonera Los Pinos, located approximately 600 meters underground.
Cundinamarca Governor Jorge Emilio Rey confirmed the casualty figures and stated that the blast was triggered by a buildup of underground gases, including methane. Rey shared the details through an official social media post, noting that emergency response teams were immediately deployed to secure the site and assist the injured.
According to official records, the national mining agency had previously identified hazardous gas concentrations at the facility during a routine inspection on April 9. Following that assessment, regulatory authorities had formally recommended the implementation of enhanced safety protocols to address the risks associated with underground gas accumulation.
Medical teams have transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment, while families of the victims are being notified. Provincial officials emphasized that all mining operations at the site have been temporarily suspended pending a comprehensive safety review. The investigation into the specific cause of the ignition remains ongoing, with authorities expected to provide additional updates as more information becomes available.
