Pakistani Students in Afghanistan Demand Reopening of Torkham Border Crossing
Pakistani students studying in Afghanistan have urged their government to reopen the Torkham border crossing after the winter holidays. They say they cannot afford airplane tickets to return home.
The Torkham crossing and other border points were closed following Pakistani airstrikes on parts of Afghanistan, including Kabul, and clashes with Taliban forces. Pakistan has permitted temporary openings at the crossings to deport Afghan migrants.
The most recent temporary opening at Torkham occurred on March 26, 2026, but it was shut again after a sniper wounded a Pakistani border guard.
The students' demands were reported by Pakistani media and highlight the challenges faced by those unable to travel by air due to financial constraints. The closure has stranded many Pakistani students in Afghanistan, preventing their return after the holiday break.
