Pakistan's Prime Minister Urges Trump to Extend Iran's Deadline by Two Weeks
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to extend by two weeks the deadline set for Iran, to allow additional time for diplomatic efforts.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Sharif requested that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz for the same two-week period as a gesture of goodwill. He also called on all parties to observe a two-week ceasefire to facilitate de-escalation.
Sharif's statement came hours before Trump's 8 p.m. Eastern Time deadline. The U.S. president has warned that if Iran fails to comply by that time, it would face massive attacks targeting its infrastructure.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a key maritime corridor between Iran and Oman, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed prior to the ongoing Middle East war. Its closure has raised concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies.
Sharif's intervention highlights Pakistan's efforts to promote dialogue amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The prime minister emphasized the importance of restraint and negotiation to prevent further conflict in the region.
