Peace Jirga Planned Between Pakistan and Taliban to Ease Tensions
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Afghan Verified) -- Pakistani sources say a peace jirga involving political leaders and tribal elders is being organized between Pakistan and the Taliban to address rising tensions and promote mutual respect, confidence-building and negotiations for lasting peace.
Arbab Shahzad Khan, a former high-ranking official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa described variously as senior secretary or secretary-general, described the gathering as an urgent need. He said participants would issue a joint declaration to be sent to leaders on both sides and call for an immediate ceasefire.
Amu TV reported the main jirga is scheduled for March 31 in Peshawar, with another similar meeting planned in Quetta. Organizers aim to invite figures who previously worked on peace efforts.
Tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban have escalated recently, with Pakistan accusing the Taliban of harboring militants responsible for attacks. The Taliban have denied the allegations. Amu TV cited specific incidents in Islamabad, Bajaur and Bannu, and noted a previous ceasefire agreement in October 2025 mediated by Qatar and Turkey.
Both Afghanistan International and Amu TV quoted Khan on the jirga's goals and the need for dialogue amid the standoff, where Pakistan has blamed the Taliban for sheltering militants.
