Pentagon Prepares for Ground Attacks on Iran, Washington Post Reports Citing US Officials
The Pentagon is preparing plans for ground attacks against Iran that would involve US special forces conducting operations inside the country, the Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing American officials.
The officials told the newspaper it remains unclear whether President Trump will approve the plans. Previous reports in American media indicated that the US has sent thousands of special forces to the Middle East in preparation for a potential ground war in Iran.
Military experts cited in the reports noted that the US holds superiority in any conflict with Iran primarily through its air force. However, they assessed that Iranian forces could gain the upper hand if US ground troops enter the country.
The preparations have been underway for weeks, according to the US officials. Multiple outlets, including Reuters, US News and World Report, Daily Mail, Economic Times, Jerusalem Post and TRT World, carried similar reports on March 28-29 citing the Washington Post article and US sources.
