Polish border guards have detained 45 migrants who crossed into Poland illegally from neighboring Lithuania. The individuals came from a number of countries in Africa and Asia. Specifically, the group included citizens of Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia. All of the migrants were without valid documents that would allow them to stay in Poland or to transit through the country.
In addition, a woman from Ukraine was detained by the authorities. She is suspected of having smuggled four migrants who did not have proper documentation. The various detentions occurred over the course of the weekend. They took place at a number of different locations situated along the border that Poland shares with Lithuania.
The detentions form part of broader efforts by Polish officials to curb irregular migration as well as human smuggling activities along the Poland-Lithuania border. The actions reflect ongoing work to enforce border regulations in that part of Europe.
